
You have probably heard that writing notes by hand beats typing them. It is a popular claim with a real study behind it — but the fuller picture is more useful, and more encouraging, than the headline suggests.
The study everyone quotes
In 2014, Mueller and Oppenheimer published a study with a memorable title: ‘The Pen Is Mightier Than the Keyboard.’ Students who took notes by hand did better on conceptual questions than those who typed. The likely reason was not the pen itself — it was that laptop users tended to transcribe lectures word for word, while handwriters, who cannot keep up at that speed, had to listen, select, and summarise (Mueller & Oppenheimer, 2014).
Why the headline is only half the story
Later work complicated the picture. A large replication and extension found the handwriting advantage was much smaller and less reliable than the original suggested (Morehead et al., 2019). The takeaway is not that keyboards are bad — it is that the medium matters far less than what you do with it. Verbatim transcription is weak whether you type or write; active processing is strong either way.
The real driver: generate, don’t copy
Decades of research on the ‘generation effect’ show that information you produce yourself is remembered better than information you simply read or copy (Slamecka & Graf, 1978). Good note-taking is really a form of generation: putting ideas into your own words, organising them, and linking them together. That is the part that builds memory — not the choice between pen and keyboard.
