NotebookLM is Google’s notebook for chatting with your own documents. For students, the obvious follow-up is whether that is enough for coursework. It depends on whether you only need to understand a source, or you also need to practise, write, and track progress toward an exam.
What Google’s notebook is built for
Google positions NotebookLM as a research and note-taking assistant that grounds answers in sources you add (Google, 2025). You upload PDFs, get summaries, ask questions, and — depending on the feature set at the time — generate audio overviews or slides. That is genuinely useful when the bottleneck is comprehension. The product site and Help Center are the canonical descriptions of that scope (Google, 2025).
Where coursework still needs another layer
Understanding a paper is step one. Most modules also require you to retrieve facts under time pressure, write from those sources, and sometimes study with a group.
Practice tests and cards
A reading notebook does not replace a quiz engine or a spaced flashcard schedule. Retrieval practice is still one of the most reliable ways to make knowledge stick (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006). If the assessment is a closed-book exam, you need questions, not only a good summary.
Essays, presentations, and progress
Coursework often ends in a paper or a slide deck. A notebook that stops at chat leaves you copying insights into other tools. ScienceIQ’s side-by-side comparison is the landing-page version of this split: comprehension versus the rest of the staircase.
How the two tools differ in practice
- Both can ingest a PDF and answer questions about it.
- Both can work with YouTube in some form; the student workflow that matters is lecture in, study assets out.
- ScienceIQ is built to turn that same upload into quizzes and flashcards, plus essays and presentations on higher plans.
- NotebookLM remains a strong choice when you only need a grounded reading companion.
When to stay in a research notebook
Stay if your task is to digest a handful of sources, ask clarifying questions, and write notes. It is a good research notebook. It is not an exam trainer.
When a study companion is the better fit
Switch when the deadline is an exam, a graded essay, or a group presentation — or when you want progress memory across sessions. Plans list what is on Free versus Pro. If you are also weighing a general chatbot, ChatGPT versus a study app covers that comparison.
