Flashcards from Your Lecture PDF

If you have ever spent an evening copying slides into Quizlet or Anki, you already know the bottleneck. The method is sound. The production work is not. A better pattern is to start from the lecture PDF itself and generate cards from the same file your professor uploaded.

Generic decks miss what you will be tested on

Shared decks and marketplace sets are convenient, but they rarely match the examples, notation, and emphasis of your module. Exams reward the local version of a topic. Cards built from someone else’s summary train someone else’s test.

Why making cards works — and why students quit

Self-testing with cards pairs well with spaced review. Kornell (2009) found that spacing cards beat cramming them, even when learners felt cramming was more effective. Dunlosky et al. (2013) likewise flagged practice testing and distributed practice as high-utility techniques.

The hidden cost is authoring

The evidence assumes you have cards to review. Building hundreds by hand is the reason people abandon Anki after a week. Anki’s own manual is built around that authoring-and-scheduling loop (AnkiWeb, 2024). If the bottleneck is creating the deck, automating the first pass from the lecture PDF is the honest fix — then you edit the weak cards instead of typing every prompt.

A simple workflow from PDF to deck

  • Download the lecture slides or reading as a PDF.
  • Upload that file rather than a random textbook chapter.
  • Generate cards, then delete anything that is trivial or off-syllabus.
  • Review on a schedule, not in one sitting.

ScienceIQ’s exam tools are built for that upload-to-cards path. For the schedule itself, spaced repetition before an exam walks through the gaps.

Quizlet, Anki, and a grounded study app

Quizlet is fast for shared sets. Anki is excellent if you will maintain a deck for years. A study app that reads your PDF is the better default when the exam is in three weeks and the source of truth is this term’s slides. Pricing includes a free plan so you can try one lecture before you commit.

If you also want questions from the same file, turning a PDF or YouTube lecture into a quiz is the companion how-to.

Keep the science, drop the busywork

The goal is not more cards. It is retrieval practice on the material you will actually sit. Generate from the lecture, trim aggressively, and review over days.
